Practical examples of why keyboard shortcuts should always
have the same effect, regardless of what part of the screen
currently has the keyboard focus.
I see some problem, doubtful terminology etc. in one file of a project.
I switch to "all files" mode (using the mouse, there is no keyboard
shortcut) to see if the same issue occurs elsewhere, and in what context.
So I press ctrl-h to start searching. It doesn't work. I must first
mouse-click into the translaton box to make the short cut work.
Idem @? switch to Lexicon, ctrl-h, doesn't work.
After arriving at an acceptable translation for a segment,
I see a term I would like to save to the TDB. I mark the target term,
shift-tab to the target language box, mark the corresponding term there,
ctrl-F11, Enter to save the pair to the TDB.
Because the segment as a whole was already translated satisfactorily, I’d like
to go on to the next one, so I press ctrl-downarrow. Now the segment does not
change from dark blue (auto assembled) to grey (finished), but remain dark blue.
This is because ctrl-downarrow works differently when the source language box
still has the focus, instead of the normal situation when the target language
box has the focus. In my opinion, this should make no difference, ctrl-downarrow
should always consistently have the same function.
I return to a pending segment (made bright blue by pressing ctrl-m earlier) by
clicking the line in the grid.
Meanwhile the problem was solved, so I fix the translation, press ctrl-u to
unpainted (remove the pending status) and happily press ctrl-downarrow to auto
send to MDB and mark finished. This works.
Now suppose, however, that no fix is necessary, but earlier idea I wasn't certain
about has proven correct. So after clicking in the grid, I do not return to the
target language box to change anything, but immediately press ctrl-u and
ctrl-downarrow. This doesn't work, the segment remains unpainted, does not
because grey (finished). Currency has shifted to the next segment, so I must
return, click in the target language box, press ctrl-downarrow again to
make the mark the segment finished.
